[PR] All-girls school takes a peek at the Internet
ADELAIDE - One of Australia's oldest and most respected girls' schools is trying to get a better handle on the Internet.
According the Director of IT Geoff Perkins, the Walford Anglican School for Girls wanted online reviews of recommended web sites available to 700 students and 120 staff over an intranet. The school was already heavily invested in FileMaker Pro with 63 shared databases, 25 of those dedicated to web based solutions. "I can't imagine life without Filemaker Pro," he says.
Perkins employed the CDML Master Class book by Brian Dunning for guidance designing and building his system. "Training in CDML is not widespread," said Perkins. "To gain insights into how best to code web based solutions has been well received by our coding personnel."
Beyond just the insight, Perkins also found that the book saved time and money. "Lots of time saved by not having to work it out for ourselves. Great to read it all clearly laid out for us." The CDML Master Class and its companion book, Lasso Master Class, are both available online at http:////www.briandunning.com.
The completed web based solution allows staff and students to submit web site reviews to the intranet and have those reviews available to the rest of the staff and students. The database collects each web site's topic, key words, title, suitability and the review of the site. Each review links to the site reviewed.
"This is really doing something that we could not do without the technology," says Perkins. "So successful has it been, we commence soon to clone the solution for student presented book reviews."
